If you take a walk along our Main Street from the North Side to the South Side, It is evident you will see progress, pride, development, and growth.

On the North Side you can find our new Police Headquarters and our newly expanded Municipal Building housing the Council Chambers, Court Room, and Meeting Room.

  • The latitude of Manville is 40.540N. The longitude is 74.588W. Elevation is 59 feet.

  • The estimated population in 2003 was 10,401.

  • Somerset County was established in 1688. Hillsborough Township encompasses what later would become Manville.

  • The Battle of Millstone, also known as the battle of Van Nest’s Mills, occurred on January 20, 1777.

  • Following the battle of Princeton, General George Washington’s soldiers traveled north following the Millstone River to Somerset Court House, then proceeded to Morristown. From New Brunswick, a British foraging party of a few hundred men also went to Somerset Court House, reaching Van Nest’s Mill (present day Manville, New Jersey). After seizing flour and livestock, the British unit set up defenses on the Millstone River, including three cannons. The local militia managed to surprise the British party by crossing the cold, waist-deep river. They captured many men and seized back the supplies.

  • In 1929, Manville was officially named after the Johns-Manville Corporation.

  • Manville is home to the Central Jersey Regional Airport, which is a public-use facility.

Somerset County Parks

The Somerset County Park system is home to more than 6,700 acres of park and open space facilities. Golf is a large component with four golf courses, two driving ranges, a pitch and putt course, and a recreational putting course.

Specialized facilities include a riding stable, an environmental education center, two tennis facilities, a swim club and paddle boating. Horticulture activities include a rock formation and a rare plant garden, an award-winning rose garden, arboretum, and a sensory and fragrance garden.

Three general-use parks offer picnic facilities, bike paths, athletic fields and fishing opportunities. The park system also encompasses several natural areas for such pursuits as bird watching and hiking.

Colonial Park
Located in nearby Franklin Township, 568-acre facility includes scenic footage on the historic Delaware and Raritan Canals and the Millstone River.

Duke Island Park
Located in Hillsborough, 332-acre "island park" traversed by the historic Raritan Power Canal.

Lord Stirling Park
887 acres in Bernards Township, occupies the western rim of the Great Swamp Basin. Designated solely for equestrian and environmental activities.

North Branch Park
Located in Bridgewater, home of the Somerset county Park Commission administrative off ices. 1 70-acre park along the North Branch of the Raritan River.

Sourland Mountain Preserve
Largest facility in the county park system, encompasses 1,670 acres through Hillsborough and.. Montgomery. Moderate and easy trails are available.
